2010 draws to a close and we are approximately 40 members away from our goal o f 200 members. As our fiscal year ends in May we still have lots of time to accomplish or come close to attaining this goal. We still have work to do in the hall but it is getting close to being complete. We will be getting one more estimate for the heat pumps and then we will be choosing a supplier and having them installed . The meals have been a great success , but we do need more people helping or cooking the odd one. We still could use more bartenders to spell off the ones we have.
The drinking laws set us back but with the right activities we can overcome these too. We hope to have a shooter course put on for the bartenders and have a volunteer who has agreed to teach us the most popular drinks and how to mix them.
The offices are all filled and I hope we will have enough to fill them in the next election.
I want to thank all the officers and the volunteers who made 2010 such a successful year. I hope we can carry on the good work into 2011.
We have had a closer association with the auxiliary and it has helped both them and us. We need to carry on working together so we can make our club as good as it can be.
We could use more input at the meetings , but I guess everyone must be happy with the way things are going or they would sure be there to let us know.
Happy New Year and all the best in 2011.

Hope’s Fraternal Order of Eagles, Branch #2690, was awarded
the regional Volunteer Group of the Year by the Canadian
Diabetes Association (CDA) in the 2010 Annual Regional
Meeting at Metrotown, in Burnaby.
It was particularly gratifying for the presenter, regional
CDA chair and local Hope pharmacist, Michael McLoughlin “to
see our community put on the map, so to speak, in such a
glowing light.”
The Eagles registered the highest per capita donation over
and above all other service clubs in a region, extending
from the eastern border of Vancouver to Boston Bar.
“And they do it all so quietly, with humility,” added
McLoughlin. “Through their dedication and generous
contributions to the CDA camp all the newly diagnosed Hope
children, and their families…. have had the opportunity to
benefit from the camp experience.”
The Eagles are stalwart supporters of the Hope branch of the
CDA, offering management and financial control expertise,
and awareness of World Diabetes Day, held on November 14,
adds McLoughlin.
“One in four people in Canada have either pre-diabetes, or
diabetes, an epidemic,” says McLoughlin. “Some of the best
controlled patients in the community attend the branch
meetings” at the Fraser Canyon Hospital.
The Hope Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association meet in
the Fraser Canyon Hospital Conference Room (downstairs) at
7:30 p.m., generally on the third Thursday of the month.

In the last two years we have donated $ 35,000 to twenty different local charities. Our lounge facilitates fund raising for these charities.
The recent changes to the liquor law and the question of what is allowable, has affected our lounge sales by seventy per cent. Even though we are all volunteers it is apparent this will greatly decrease the amount we will be able to give to these charities. We are trying to find a solution to this problem but haven’t been able up to now.
We thought that providing a safe ride home would be one answer but of course that requires more volunteers than we presently have. With no means of transit and a limited number of taxis this remains a huge problem for rural towns.
The biggest problem is not knowing what is allowable and the reports that even one swallow can put you over the legal limit. Members that normally meet and enjoy the company of others are prevented from doing so by the uncertainty of the law. While we don’t condone drinking and driving , responsible adults that used to enjoy a drink with dinner or with friends are having to pay for the minority of irresponsible drinkers. It seems to be always the same , regulate the majority because of the minority.
Hopefully some solution will be forthcoming so we will be able to support the local charities as we have in the past.

Hope Eagles.
Hope aerie makes the big time as we made the National Eagles Magazine. October edition visit link under publications.
The visit to Maple Ridge was enjoyed by nine members from the Aerie and Auxiliary. Everyone enjoyed the meal and the evening. We are trying to come up with ideas to provide transportation to our lounge patrons due to the new driving laws. We are open to suggestions. We still need a night time bartender for one or two nights a week. The hours would be approximately 5:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.
We have about two days of outside painting to finish the building then we will start back inside to do the washrooms and the small hall. We also have to change the forms for the outside storage room so if you have any carpenter skills or an hour or so to help out let us know.
The heat pumps still require one more estimate and will be done in time for the cooling season next year.
Our membership has now reached 167 ,we are well on our way to 200 and hope to reach that before May 2011. So if you see anyone that looks like they need to join a fraternity sign them up. Convince a friend especially if they can paint or build or just enjoy a good time. We have the new taps in the lounge thanks to the good people at Labatts brewery for giving them to us and for paying to install them. We now have Bud Light on tap.

We will have a dance and dinner and other good times to be arranged. this will be third weekend in Feb 18,19,20,2011. Also our signs are up on the building.
Air conditioning/ heat pumps have been approved for lounge and hall. We are getting two more quotes this week and then we will install.
Sign base installed on building and waiting for printing of the signs.
The work day was a great success. Thanks to all the volunteers that showed up to help. The cabana was cleaned . The glass washer and stove filters were pressured washed. Forms were built for our new concrete pad. Doors were hung in the main hall and the hall storage was dunged out. The stove vent was cleaned and it looks like new. About a months worth of work was done in one day. There's still work to be done but if we can all give 1 or 2 more hours it sure helps.
Recently arrived in Hope where it will be based. A fenced area will be built for secure storage.
The trailer will be fully stocked with Blankets, water, toothbrushes and toiletries everything you can use when you have to abandon your home. More information to follow.
